How Your Wireless Network Can Get You in Trouble

Norman Newsletter May 2011 If you are unable to see the newsletter, click here.
Dear Customer,

How long did it take to set a password for your wireless network? In case you got frustrated and didn't set one - thinking you don't mind your neighbor piggybacking your wireless network - you might literally get busted.

An American man experienced an unpleasant surprise when he suddenly found himself in the middle of pornography raid - in his own home. His wireless network had been used by a neighbor for illegal purposes.

Further investigation proved him innocent, but the whole episode could have easily been avoided by securing his network.
When setting up a wireless network, always remember to protect it with a password that is not easy to guess.

•Your wireless networks access point or router is by default most likely not protected. Start securing your network by entering your wireless router's configuration menu.

•Set a new administrational password for your wireless router. Additionally, enable encryption (WEP/WPA/WPA2), and create a password for users to be able to access your network.

•The steps above are different from router to router, so check the manual or manufacturer's website for further instructions.
