 | | Dear Customer, > Over 10 million of people have been using music streaming service from Spotify. Thursday 24 March, a tweet indicated that something might be wrong with Spotify Open; a free version, which displays ads : 'Just got a virus alert on a PDF. The process that tried to download/open it is spotify.exe. Has spotify's ad network been compromised?' Malicious 3rd party ads have been around for a while, so what is particularly interesting with this case? The Spotify incident is significantly different, however. No social engineering was needed in order to get users to "view" the advertisement (i.e. visit a web site). A user would have been infected even if his Spotify application was running in the background when the malicious advertisement was displayed. Two things you can do to be protected: 1. Keep software updated with the latest security updates. 2. Use security software that supports detection technology of threats that are not solely signature based. Norman security products use our Norman SandBox®, which detects unknown malware. |
